Sagres Chopp

I was at the beer store in Davis Square on another hot and muggy day here in the greater Boston area.  I was thirsty for cold beer and searching for the perfect thirst quencher when I happened upon a sale.  One 24-beer case of 11.2 oz. loose-bottle Sagres Chopp for 12.99, down from 24.99!  I like a good sale, so I took a gamble on this Portuguese cerveja.

Once I had a bottle chilled at home, I cracked it open and poured it into a glass.  Weighing in at 4.9% ABV,  it was a light yellow color with tight and light foam that was quick to fade into a broken head residue with little lacing.  The beer was refreshing and sweet, with a surprising peppery note that reminded me of black pepper and green pepper mixed together. This spiciness had a tongue-numbing tingle, and went down crisply.

This was a welcome surprise.  When I saw its color and packaging, I wasn’t expecting much, but it is a nice beer for a hot day, and the sale price could not be beat!  I echo the sentiments of the bottle when I loudly exclaim, “Leve na Boa!”  I have no idea what that actually means, but I assume it means something grand.
