2009 Mulderbosch Cabernet Sauvignon Rose

One a recent trip to the Wino-Mart, Jenny was taken by the label design of another rose wine, this time the 2009 Mulderbosch Cabernet Sauvignon Rose from the costal region of South Africa. At 12.99, it was a risk I was willing to take.

We brought the 13.5% a.b.v. wine home and put it in the fridge to accompany dinner that night. On uncorking the bottle with dessert, we were greeted with the scent of strawberries and yeast, with the slightest hint of lavender. This wine tastes like cheap brut champagne, or at the least it tastes more like a white than a red or a rose. The flavors are a bit bland and sour, with a subtle softness of berries and an aftertaste of grapefruit. I found myself wishing this was sparkling as it tastes like very dry champagne with no backbone and a sour bite. I’m not sure that I’d drink this again.
