Mo Hotta Hot Sauces

In my constant search for delicious sauces of the spicy persuasion I have come across a most wonderful website, www.mohotta.com. This site offers a full compliment of all things spicy including hot sauces, BBQ sauces, salsas, and snacks. As a test run I decided on two delicious sounding hot sauces: Dave’s Cool Cayenne and Smack My Ass and Call Me Sally. I took the first because I truly do enjoy the spicier than jalapenos but not as spicy as habaneros flavor that the cayenne pepper provides. I purchased the second because of its rockin’ name.

The sauces arrived in my office a few days later, gingerly packed into a brown box with a full brochure of Mohotta’s products. I decided to try to Dave’s Cool Cayenne first: The sauce has a great flavor to it, combining garlic and onion with cayenne heat and vinegary tang. It has proven to be quite delicious with rice, pizza, and chicken. The heat is enough to dazzle the tongue, but dissipates quickly enough so that the eating process is not slowed in any way. Unfortunately for me, the sauce has become quite addictive, and I am now putting it on everything which means that in short order that I will need replenish my supply.

On to Smack My Ass and Call Me Sally: Any bottle that carries this banner on it should contain a liquid that truly gives you a “smack”. I do not think that this sauce lived up to its name. Mind you, it was still wonderful. It was milder than the Dave’s, which I was expecting due to the low Scoville rating, but I still expecting some kind of hidden kick. It has a little more substance than the Dave’s and provides for a more complex array of flavors on the tongue. In general I would say this is great sauce to have around, but it should be under a different name. If you are going to call a sauce “Smack My Ass and Call Me Sally” you should expect that tasters are going to come to the table with some pre-determined expectations. It is unfortunate that the sauce could not live up to those expectations.
I would recommend any person who is a lover of the spicier side of life to take a good look at www.mohotta.com, it has a wealth of information on all its sauces, including the Scoville units for each sauce (regular old Tabasco measures about 2,500 as a reference point; Dave’s Cool Cayenne is 4325 and the Smack My Ass was 780) and a link where you can create your own sauce. Keep this site in mind for the spice lovers in your life.
