I have promised this review for a while, but every time I sit down to review Magic Hat’s Hocus Pocus, I realize that I have already consumed my supply, and this facilitates new trips to Downtown Wine and Spirits for more beer. It is an ugly cycle, but I have finally trapped one of these beers while I have a few minutes, so here it is.
Hocus Pocus is Magic Hat’s summer ale offering. The box boasts a malty sweetness and a crisp finish, while the bottle tells of a 4.5% ABV. This ale pours a golden straw color with a light and airy head that dissipates quickly. Bubbles continuously rise creating an almost carbonated look throughout the drink. Its nose is thickly malty and sweet, while glancing undertones of freshly mowed grass make their presence known. My first impression of the taste was a distinct clover honey flavor, complete with sweetness. Meanwhile, a malty body takes over, and it is finished with a citrusy crispness that begs you to drink more. Hints of dry white wine and fresh bread also join the collection of flavors to round out a very distinctive ale.
I have spoken of my aversion to Magic Hat offerings in past articles, and with few exceptions, I stick by that rule steadfastly. However, this summer ale is the exception to the rule. This was everything I want in a summer beer, and the fact that I drink them too quickly to actually sit down and review them definitely speaks to the drinkability factor and my craving of this brew. I have to hand it to you, Magic Hat. You really found something here, and have built a beer that you should be proud of. I encourage everyone to try this tasty and refreshing treat. It is perfect for all things summer.
