Mediterranean Snack Food Co. Lentil Chips

Last week I put myself on a special diet to combat my seasonal allergies. It involves being vegan (no animal products at all) and also not eating wheat. It’s not a fun diet, and it makes me cranky because I feel hungry almost all the time. The diet really helps with the allergies though, so for a week or two out of the year it’s the way to go. My biggest problem when on this diet is the lack of wheat. I love bread and snack on its many forms constantly. I especially miss bread when I’m about to dive into a delicious tub of hummus; a corn tortilla chip just doesn’t cut it. I came across a “lentil chip” from Mediterranean Snack Food Co. at a local grocery store and decided to give it a try. The chip is made from lentil, adzuki and garbanzo bean flour and is completely gluten free, vegetarian and celiac friendly, and has 70% less fat than a regular potato chip (who really cares about that part though?). They come in three flavors: sea salt, sea salt and cracked pepper, and cucumber dill. I went for the sea salt and cracked pepper. The texture of the chip is somewhere between pita chip and puffed rice, having a crisp yet airy quality with a slight sponginess. The chips are seasoned well and taste of both sea salt and cracked pepper; however, they have a pervasive bean flour flavor about them. The bean flour flavor makes them a little too strong to go great with hummus, though they are still better than a corn tortilla chip. I think they would go quite well with certain sorts of cheese. If you can’t have real pita I wouldn’t call the “lentil chip” the next best thing, but it would definitely be on the list of substitutes. http://www.mediterraneansnackfoods.com/
