Kilauea Black Salt

I was at Williams-Sonoma the other day being especially fancy when I stumbled upon some black salt from Hawaii.  What more could my kitchen use than black salt?  I thought to myself.  Allowing the impulse to buy to take over my body I swept the container to the cash register and made my purchase.  The salt is truly black in color due to the bonding of carbon from the Hawaiian lava flows.  The grains are large and shiny.  The taste is predictably salty, though it has a lighter flavor than your regular old table salt.

The packaging suggested sprinkling some of the salt on fresh fruit so this is what I did.  The light salt flavor truly brings out the various flavors of cantaloupe, melon, and watermelon.  It made a small fruit salad an extremely satisfying adventure.

If you’ve got a fancy side to you I’d definitely recommend picking up a jar of black salt for those special occasions.  After all, it’s priceless just as a conversation piece.
