Keber Collio Bianco

Edi Keber Collio Bianco is a wine produced by Christian Keber in the north of Italy.  Christian, at 21, is extremely young for a winemaker, but has taken over much of the farming work from his father.  He is bright, courteous, and full of energy.  Just don’t get in a fight with him over who’s going to pay the bill for dinner – he starts throwing money at you.  He and his vineyards are known especially for their Vespa, which is bright yellow with a picture of a beautiful dark skinned woman holding a glass of white wine painted on the side.  The quote painted on the Vespa translates to “the only white I like” – take that as you will.

Onto the wine itself.  The Keber Collio Bianco is straw yellow in color and has a very pleasant aroma.  Wild flowers and green fruits come to mind when I put my nose to the glass.  On tasting the wine is surprisingly dry with good minerality and hints of grass.  It is clean with a nice long finish.  In my opinion a lack of fruit on the palate unbalances the wine.  The bottle sells for around $17 and I’ve certainly had better Italian whites for cheaper.  The wine, like its farmer, is young and has a lot of growing to do.  I look forward to tasting future vintages as Christian perfects his methods.
