Harpoon Octoberfest

A couple of years back I had a chance to attend the Harpoon Brewery's Octoberfest celebration. Actually now that I remember I got in for free. For some reason I’ve always considered myself a competent writer (at least in Spanish) and whenever a chance arises to have my work judged I jump at the chance. In this case it was a contest sponsored by Harpoon and Bukowskie’s tavern. While I didn’t walk away with a giant check, Connoisseur Jon and my own extensive beer knowledge won us free passes to Octoberfest and some t-shirts. It was then and there that I tried Harpoon's Octoberfest beer for the first time and fell in love with it.

This beer pours amber and produces a thick head that quickly subsides but leaves some coating behind. The smell is sweet and malty, with the slightest hint of floral hops and spices. In taste it is mostly fruity and sweet, with a bit of toasted malt and a slightly alcoholic finish. The edges on this beer are very well rounded, at no point are you stabbed by neither the sharpness of an unbalanced hop character nor the excessive smokiness of toasted grain. While not particularly memorable it is in fact extremely tasty and refreshing, a beer I could see myself consuming an entire six pack of if such a thing where in any way responsible.
