Bulldog London Dry Gin

I'll admit it, while I'd never want one as a pet, and I've never considered myself much of a dog person, I think English Bulldogs are just about the cutest breed out there. So when I learned about the existence of Bulldog London Dry Gin, I knew I'd have to give it a try.

The bottle is short and stout with a spiked collar, much like the traditional image of its namesake. On opening the bottle I am immediately floored by the herbal punch I smell; juniper and citrus pith being the biggest players in the nose. Bulldog has a pretty thick mouthfeel for a gin and a sweeter taste then I'd expect from a London Dry Gin. Flavors of complex herbs, cucumber, and a light fruity sweetness give this gin a unique taste, a bit medicinal, but perfectly drinkable. The lingering aftertaste is that of lime leaves and grass. Even though the initial alcoholic whack on the tongue leaves no doubt of this gin's 80 proof, this is a decidedly smooth neutral spirit. Although the thick mouthfeel takes a little getting used to, the flavor of this gin will keep me coming back for more.

I think the following is the perfect use for Bulldog Gin, and I call it a Cucumber Rickey.

2oz. Bulldog Gin

1oz. simple syrup

1oz. lime juice

2oz. cucumber juice or puree

Shake with ice, strain and pour into a Collins glass over crushed ice, top with club soda and garnish with a cucumber spear and a sprig of dill.

This cocktail would be perfect with grilled fish on a hot summer day!
