Boar's Head Bacon vs. Oscar Meyer Bacon

As every hot blooded American knows there is a never ending quest to find the perfect piece of bacon.  I especially find the need to search out perfection in pork products due to the lack of meat diversity in my neighborhood.  My neighborhood has yet to see a supermarket (though one across the street is to open shortly) and until one opens I am relegated to the bodega off the subway that provides only chicken sausage, assorted cured meats, and bacon.  This fact has led me to try many packages of the same types of bacon, namely Boars Head and Oscar Meyer brands.

Boars Head has been very hit or miss for me.  When the package is good the bacon is meaty and cut thick, but when the package is bad it’s really bad.  The last package of Boars Head I purchased gleaned thin strips with all too much fat, effectively quartering the amount of bacon I consumed after the fat was rendered in the fry pan.  Most distressing is the fact that most Boars Head packages are a miss and only very few land in the hit category.

Oscar Meyer has been quite consistent all along.  While it is not the best bacon to be had you can’t beat the consistency for the price.  Oscar Meyer is generally meaty enough so that you have some really good eating after you’ve fried up the package.  It is also cut thick enough to handle easily.

Long story short, in the great bacon battle Oscar Meyer is currently ahead while Boars Head, with its gigantic marketing machine, is so far behind it thinks it’s first.
